GUNSMITHING

GUNSMITHING STANDARD RATES

By shop owner, Jerry Kunzman

Basic Cleaning $40-$50 for most firearms.
This follows the manual or instructions for the firearm.  Most of the time, it means “field strip” as per the instructions.  This will ensure the firearm is functional and reliable.  It will not address cosmetic issues.  Note- part of cleaning shotguns is choke removal.  If they maintained the firearm properly, the chokes should be easy to remove.  Stuck chokes can end up being a lot of labor, hence more cost.

Deep Cleaning - $40 for Glocks, $160-$175 for most other firearms.
This normally means a complete disassembly.  Except for sights and magazine release all serviceable internal parts will be taken out and broken down.  Hand cleaning and inspection of all parts, including springs.  “Hot tanking” parts where needed is included in this cleaning.  Reassembly and function tested.

Over Under / Side by Side Shotguns deep cleaning does not include complete disassembly of the hammer/trigger group.  We can usually clean without breaking it down.  The original style Browning A5 shotguns will be torn down and are complicated, so they are at the top end of the price range.

Function Testing - $20-$60 / ammunition, where applicable.
Simple function check usually means visual inspection, dry firing, and magazine insertion, removal check; safety, decocker, and slide stop/release tested - $20. Primer testing is the same as above, but include testing the firing pin using primers (and empty shell casing with a primer inserted) - $30 total Testing firing, live.  This means we run ammunition through it and check all aspects including magazine function, trigger function, slow fire, rapid fire (where applicable), ejection consistency, angle of ejected casings / shells.  Additionally, safety, decocker, slide stop/release function check. - $50-$60 + ammunition.
Rust Removal - $50 & up
This usually requires knowledge of metallurgy, chemical reactions, junction potential, discoloration, and other cosmetic issues, such as minor rebluing.  This must be quoted per job, which will require our inspection.

Rebluing - $50 and up
We can only do “cold bluing.”  This provides some reasonable touch up and is usually not perfect if viewed closely.

Pitting – Fix is not available from us.

Milling Slide for Optic (e.g. red dot) - $150
This included custom milling to match the exact sight.  Most have a front radius, and we match it.  This also includes sight mounting, but not calibration (“zeroing”).

Install Optic (e.g. red dot to pistol slide) - $30 - $60
While included with milling, some firearms come “optic ready.”  The cost goes up if the sight doesn’t fit snuggly (front to rear).  This is not just a cosmetic issue and it can be fixed with custom shims.  While shims are not mandatory to close the gap(s), there is a good chance the sight will move from recoil.  This means it will either end up loose, or in some cases the screw(s) shear off.  If they shear off flush with the slide, it can get expensive.

Scope install & bore sighting - $85+ (customer supplies parts)
Installing a scope is one of the most misunderstood items.  Anyone can install a scope by just putting in on and tightening screws.  There is a lot more that goes into it.  If it’s actually a long-range rifle, the small details matter even more.  Here are some of the details we might have to go through:

  • Check scope for precise alignment of crosshairs to turrets.
  • Check the scope’s BDC markings to ensure they will work with the rounds.
  • Measuring and planning the mounts; as not all rings will work with the spacing needed created by the scope tube available.
  • Install mount (often it’s just LocTite-ing screws through a rail, to the receiver).
  • Install rings and check alignment and lapping any pairs that need it.  Lapping is done by hand and can sometimes be a time consuming task.  Most modern rings are precise enough that little to no lapping is required.
  • Snug ring basses for test fitment.  “Snug” means lightly tightened.
  • Install scope on rings with just barely enough tension to hold it in place.
  • Check and clearance scope with objective lens to barrel or forearm or other objects, such as heat shield, lights, lasers, control buttons, iron sights.
  • Measure for eye relief suited to the customer.
  • Check and clearance scope to bolt or charging handle where applicable.
  • Clearance scope caps and magnification lever where applicable.
  • Level mount (e.g. rail(s)) and/or receiver, install second level on barrel to match.  Remove the original level.
  • Check crosshairs for level and plumb.
  • Once the placement is done and clearances passed, we forward load and torque the screws per the manufacturer.
  • Setup and install collimator (or our special alignment system depending on firearm).
  • Set zero to customer-specified distance.  This is just bore sighting and will get the shooter one paper needed for precise zeroing at the range.

Not included- extra machining work, fitting, bluing, etc. to modify mount rails.  This is usually done as a compromise due to the unavailable status.

Sighting In A Rifle - $150 + ammunition
Sighting in (zeroing) is done with research on ballistics, the best type of ammunition, use of a stabilizer such as a lead sled, and proof target results.

Scope Trials - $50 (if combined with “Sighting In A Rifle”) – otherwise $100
This is done solely to test the scope’s capability and consistency.  This also assumes the scope and rifle are functioning properly.

Precision Rifle Training - $90 - $240
This training is usually those that would like to hunt and do not know the proper or best ways to shoot with precision.  It can also be used to train someone for long range shooting.  It is really good for those that have scope adjustment turrets.  This training is usually done one-on-one and can be combined in the “Sighting In A Rifle.”  The $240 rate includes sighting in and training.

Information only- Mount selection
Sometimes we spend time researching mounts (usually a rail section) that will properly fit to the receiver.  There are sometimes lots of choices, so more research.  In choosing a mount, “Built-in MOA” is something to consider and that will depend on the scope and the distance you will be shooting and the bullet drop.  The next we look for rings, which can be had for not much money

Drill and Tap (usually for scope) $40 per hole
If threaded holes are needed to install the rails section.  Also applies to any other holes needed.

Bore sight - $50
This only applies to a firearm that has a properly mounted optic.  Bore sighting is included with sight/optic mounting.

Fit and cut/spacers stock $90
Proper fitment (length of pull) is important for best results.  There is a special tool we have for this.  Otherwise, there is another, less precise method that can be used without the tool.  This price is general.  If there are spacers to be added and the customer supplies them, and if they already properly fit, then this would be a lower cost.  Cutting a stock requires special setup, and expertise, as often we have to match compound angles.  This cost is the quoted price at the time we take it in.

Install recoil pad (OEM stock) $30 - $100
If the firearm unmodified from the factory, and we are sourcing and installing it, this would be the lower price end.  If we have to obtain an aftermarket pad we will need to install it*, scribe it, remove it, setup the jig, grind to the line, then hand work that last bit to very carefully creep up on a perfect fit without damage to the finish.

*Sometimes the hole pattern on the desired recoil pad doesn’t line up with the holes in the factory stocks.  However, if the wood in the buttstock will accommodate it, we can just drill new holes.  In the case where there is not enough wood or the stock is polymer, then this will require us to make/mount some custom blocks to make new holes to match the new butt pad.

Muzzle threading (i.e. muzzle brake / compensator) - $100
Muzzle brakes and compensators are becoming more popular on hunting rifles.  This can significantly reduce recoil.  Whenever you see a hunting rifle without a muzzle device it would be good to recommend one.  Threading a barrel requires complete disassembly of components (e.g. we only pull off what’s needed to get a barrel out).  We can then chuck into a lathe.  Our machines can usually provide any thread pattern desired, assuming it will work on the rifle chosen.  Installation of the new device is included.  Any thread, even left-handed.

Muzzle Device Installation $30+
This will include removing an old device if necessary.  Simple timing using a crush washer included.

Muzzle Timing - $30 - $150
Some muzzle devices require more than a simple crush washer (special washers and or shims).  Some need it be cut (threading) if the customer wants a continuous look.  In other words, the barrel and muzzle brake look like one piece.

Glass Bedding - $150 - $200

Pillar Bedding - $100 - $175

*Trigger/action/ springs – performance mods. $30 labor and up
This can include installation of kits or parts to enhance performance.  There are many products to choose from.  We can make recommendations based on the gun.  Sometimes techniques and special tools are required along with expertise.  A 1911 action rework with stock, or aftermarket parts is possible as well.

Competition Firearms
We can design, modify, and build competition firearms.  We do have some limits and if we cannot fulfill your needs, you do not pay anything, unless agreed upon beforehand.

Machine work
We have two offsite machine shops.  One is for basic jobs and the other shop is equipped with cutting edge machine capable of CNC, EDM, and other complicated processes.  We can usually machine other projects, even if they are not firearms related.  However, do not ask us to make any parts that could be used in a suppressor or to make guns full auto.  While we admire your creativity, we don’t take chances with the NFA rules.

Design work
We can design AR15-style rifles.  The cost of design work is usually built into the job.  If we work up a parts list/design and it doesn’t meet your budget or needs, there is no charge, unless agreed upon ahead of time.

Rush charge - $150
Sometimes you need something done immediately.  Regular jobs generally have a "cue," which means wait times than can be weeks, and on occasion, months.  If you pay the rush charge, we literally start working on your job immediately and won't stop until it's finished (using business hours).  The time frame to finish your job could be anywhere from "while you wait," to a matter of hours.  Each job is different so we will evaluate the job and give you an estimated time frame.  In the case of waiting for parts aside, most rush jobs are finished within 24 hours.

Warranty / guarantee – we stand behind everything we do, 100%.  The main reason we started this business is to have a friendly gun shop with quality service, customer education, very knowledgeable staff, and a great atmosphere.  If we work on a gun and the parts and/or labor we provided fails or doesn’t work properly, just bring it back.  In this case we don’t charge anything.  How long does this offer last?  “I don’t know.  In 11 years, I have never asked anyone, “how long ago did you buy this?” said shop owner, Jerry Kunzman.  “We have so few issues, that it’s a trivial cost to us.  This should make up for the hassle of having to return it and wait; then pick it up.  Our reputation and service beat the internet and all other gun shops.  If you buy a Glock at any shop but ours and have an issue, you must contact Glock and deal with it.  With us, just bring it back and we will take care of it regardless of factory warranty or not.”

*We can install and fit almost any aftermarket parts and trigger kits available.
